My name is Meaghan McGuire and I am the Region V JAM Advisor, as well as the student council advisor from Monroe Middle School. I am also a 7th and 8th grade science teacher in Monroe, and coach 7th grade girls basketball. When I’m not busy with those things I love spending time with my family in the great outdoors! Yellowstone Lake, Devils Lake, and Magnolia Bluff Park have many great memories for me!
The WASC has been a part of my life for so many years, as my journey began as a student at Brodhead High School. As a student WASC member, I always looked forward to going to our Regional Fall Summit in Madison. It was such a great day to meet new people from nearby schools and get new ideas for our council. Now, as a teacher and advisor, I love seeing what an impact the WASC has for each of the students and adults involved. I am still making so many great connections, gaining new ideas and leadership skills, and taking new adventures. Helping my council host the state conference last year was a great endeavor with so many memories I’ll never forget. Getting involved and attending WASC events is such a great opportunity – I highly suggest it!!!!
The Monroe Middle School student council does such a fabulous job hosting a variety of events throughout the year. We have dodgeball and volleyball tournaments, movie nights, a dance, and each month do some sort of drive/collection for local organizations. In some months we collect food and health goods for our Backpack Buddies, Food Pantry and Family Promise. In other months we host “Change for Change” – penny wars to donate money to different charities such as Pennies for Patients, the Humane Society, and more.
Hands down, I feel our best event, and my personal favorite, is our Senior Citizen Holiday Party. The day before winter break, our council invites senior citizens from the community for a morning of BINGO, musical performances, breakfast snacks, socialization and caroling. We completely take over our gym and turn it into a wonderful holiday event. Stay tuned for our council’s write-up on this event!
As your Region V advisor, I am hear to answer any questions and listen to any new ideas you may have! Never hesitate to reach out! For advisors in Region V, we are still looking for someone to fill the spot! Let me know if you are interested!
