January Leadership Journey- Leadership Thoughts from the WASC Executive Director

Happy New Year Esteemed Advisors, Administrators, Students, and WASC Supporters,

At the beginning of a new year, most of us probably write down places that we will adventure to or where a goal might take us. Although that strategy seems logical, Maya Angelou reminds us of enjoying the journey instead of putting all of the focus on “that place” we want to reach.  One of my favorite authors and speakers, Brene Brown, illustrates the same message in her recent book, Braving the Wilderness – a must read in 2018!

I believe in what Maya said 20 years ago and what Brene shares today.  We often find ourselves wallowing in “where the grass is greenest”.  When do WE get to fly over that rainbow?   The wilderness is real. The wilderness is necessary. There will be times when standing alone feels too hard, too scary, and we will doubt our ability to make our way through the uncertainty.  There will most definitely be the doubters, the naysayers, and the critics. This is when, as Brene and Maya share, you reach deep into your wild heart and remind yourself, “I am the wilderness”. We are EVERY part of our journey.  When you embrace that, the reward is always great!

In 2018, my wish for you is that you embrace your journey, all the lovely and lonely moments. May you have doors that open, doors that slam shut, and doors, that with an interesting knock, finally give way to your calls.  Embrace your wild heart and dance with exhilaration in any open spot of your wilderness.  The uncomfortable and uncertain places in life always lead to greatness.

As for 2018, the WASC is also excited and ready to tackle uncertainty.  In a few short months, you will learn about the new places we will adventure to this upcoming year!  Also, mark your calendars for January 15th!  We launch our spring programs including IGNITE, the Elementary, JAM, and SHS State Conferences, Summer Leadership Camp, and Staff Applications for Camp and RYLA.  Brochures for these events should be on your desks next week.  You can also download a copy at our website!

I am looking forward to an exciting year!  We have great things in store for the student leaders of Wisconsin!

We hope that you choose to join us at an upcoming WASC student leadership event. Information and registration is available at wasc.org! Click on Programs & Events in the menu to choose a specific event!
